Bob Dylan: Tell Tale Signs

Bob Dylan’s forthcoming album, Tell Tale Signs: Rare and Unreleased, 1989-2006, is now available for free online listening – a week ahead of its release!

This isn’t just a random collection – it’s a stunning album with its own very distinctive style and flavour (the first disc is especially good). There are some wonderful songs, including two outtakes of the 2001 masterpiece, “Mississippi”. (Is “Mississippi” the best song ever written? Yes.)

One of the new songs, “Red River Shore,” has got me completely smitten. Here are some of the lyrics:

Now I’m wearing the cloak of misery
And I’ve tasted jilted love
And the frozen smile upon my face
Fits me like a glove
But I can’t escape from the memory
Of the one that I’ll always adore
All those nights when I lay in the arms
Of the girl from the Red River shore
...
Well, I’m a stranger here in a strange land
But I know this is where I belong
I’ll ramble and gamble for the one I love
And the hills will give me a song
Though nothing looks familiar to me
I know I’ve stayed here before
Once, a thousand nights ago,
With the girl from the Red River shore

Wow, Red River Shore is a gorgeous!

There's quite a bit of Oh Mercy content here, isn't there? Perhaps it will redirect some listeners to reconsider an album that I don't think was ever really given a fair reception.

The reprising memories of an old man.

See Girl from the North Country. Same girl? Red River of the North? Yikes? Fargo?

I wish dylan had left Mississippi a day earlier.

That song would be more interesting.

If I'm not mistaken Red River Shore was written by Gordon Lightfoot and is a cover of a wonderful Kingston Trio song. Speaking of the KT, I just heard that Nick Reynolds, one of the original members of the Trio, passed away in San Diego. He was a friend of mine!

Dolfina,

You are right in that "Red River Shore" was a Kingston Trio song, but it is very, very different from Dylan's "Red River Shore". However, the KT song contains a few lyrics that Dylan appropriated for his "Time Out of Mind" song, "Not Dark Yet":

"She wrote me a letter. She wrote it so kind..."

Hugely enjoyable collection! The percussion-based Series of Dreams is revelatory.

This is an extraordinary song! I can't help but keep playing it over and over as I drive. It is bittersweet, longing, reflective poem! This and "Mississippi "on this album are some of the best songs Dylan ever wrote!
