You didn't see Wolf Creek and you're Australian?! A fantastic film! Bleak, evil and hopeless. It left me kind of depressed, with that kind of sinking feeling in my stomach. Which is why it was so good! No cathartic moral in the end - just pure horror.

Good choices by the way. Last Days bored me as well and Life is Beautiful, which I saw again just a few days ago, is, well, beautiful. And look forward to No Country. It's very good film!

To be honest, Arni, I'm still trying to work up the courage to see Wolf Creek. I'm just hoping it doesn't make me afraid forever after of the Australian bush (let's face it, the bush is already pretty bloody scary as it is!).

Hi Ken: how can I hate that Pride and Prejudice adaptation? Three easy steps: (1) Read the novel a few times; (2) Spend years watching and re-watching the masterful 1995 BBC version, until you're madly in love with Jennifer Ehle's angelically gorgeous Elizabeth Bennet; (3) Now see the 2005 version. Ugh! (Don't worry, my wife also enjoyed the 2005 version; she assures me that I'm just a snob.)

But seriously, even though there's nothing I liked about this new adaptation, I reckon its single unpardonable sin is Keira Knightley's constant juvenile giggling. An Elizabeth Bennet who giggles? She might as well cuss and spit.

I expected to loathe the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice: it was too soon after the mini-series, which is more-or-less definitive, and as a short-running film it couldn't help but be less faithful to the novel. And one messes with Aunt Jane at one's peril.

I was however pleasantly surprised. Yes, it is less faithful to the book: a film-version of the story rather than a film of the book Austen wrote. But granted this, it has things to say in its favour. KK's Lizzy is the right age and the right build, as Jennifer Ehle's Elisabeth, for all her virtues --- <emote>sigh!</emote> --- is not. As a reviewer pointed out at the time, it gives one a sense (as the '95 series did not) of how Darcy was isolated by both his wealth and his high-mindedness. And Donald Sutherland's Mr Bennett, most certainly the wrong age for the part, was nonetheless excellent.

As for Keira Knightley's ladette tendencies: these are confirmed by all reports, but Elisabeth is supposed to be a girl of high spirits. It's a commonplace observation that Lydia is a less intelligent and unimproved version of her sister, and that in general they are the two most alike among the five.
