Five things

Brandon Wason tagged me with this “five things” quiz. I won’t do all of them, but here are a couple of my “five things”:

Five tasty things
1. Italian food, especially pasta served with a nice Italian red wine
2. Very rich chocolate mud cake
3. Very good espresso (my favourite is from Campos in Sydney)
4. Very cold Guinness
5. Another slice of mud cake (with another espresso)

Five things I would do with a lot of money
1. Buy myself a full set of the TRE, and then a set of RGG
2. Buy a holiday chateau beside a lake in Switzerland
3. Take a three- or four-year holiday in my Swiss chateau
4. Buy Sean du Toit his own set of Kittel’s TDNT, so that he doesn’t have to drive so often to the library
5. Buy a new car—since mine was in a crash this morning (no injuries!)

Utterly impressed by the aesthetic quality of your website!

May I ask how you approached your PhD subject matter? I ask, pursuing a similar direction myself . . .

Hi, thanks for your comment. I'm glad you like the site's design -- it was kindly done for me by Prochein Amy (see her link at the bottom of the sidebar).

As for PhD subject-matter, I guess my main approach was to get a really good supervisor (who was able to advise me on a choice of topic), and to read massive amounts of primary and secondary sources. When it comes to choosing a topic, my supervisor's advice was to choose something that I could (hypothetically!) spend the rest of my life with, not something that could quickly become boring. Does this answer your question at all?

Anyway, if you're interested in the particular topic of my dissertation, I recently posted a short summary of it here: http://faith-theology.blogspot.com/2005/11/my-first-book.html

Sorry to hear about the accident, I'm glad no one was injured

Ben,

You seem like a smart guy, help me out here.

I have an important question that I can use your help with. I understand that your guy Pat Robertson suggested that the heathens in Dover, PA pray to Darwin after Pat's friend God wipes the Patforsaken place off the face of the earth. But I'm left wondering about the people in Massachusetts. Presumably Pat's going to ask God to wipe out that limp-wristed state for their support of gay marriage. My question is this: When God wipes out Massachusetts who do the people there pray to, Liberace? How about that Gomer Pyle guy, I understand that he was a little light in the loafers. Let me know when you can.

Thanks

Ben,

Sorry to hear about the wreck. I pray God's grace upon you as you recover. Also know that I sent the book today air mail.

Best
Joe

Yeah, it's a relief that no one was injured. And the Bob Dylan CDs in the glovebox escaped unscathed. Thanks for sending the book, Joe!

Thanks, Phil, I enjoyed your humorous comment. You said that "your guy Pat Robertson suggested that ... God would wipe the Patforsaken place [Dover] off the face of the earth."

Trust me, Phil, if Pat Robertson were "my guy", I would very quickly go out and find a new religion, or perhaps simply kill myself. Pat Robertson's deranged opinions really have nothing to do with Christian faith. He said that the people of Dover had "voted God out" of their town: I only wish we could somehow vote Robertson out as well....
