Best TV series of 2009
OK, here’s my pick of the year’s best 10 TV series. I should emphasise that the #1 show is light years ahead of the rest…
1. Mad Men, season 3 (AMC)
2. True Blood, season 2 (HBO)
3. Flight of the Conchords, season 2 (HBO)
4. In Treatment, season 2 (HBO)
5. Little Dorrit (BBC)
6. Glee (Fox)
7. The Librarians, season 2 (ABC)
8. Mumbai Calling (BBC)
9. United States of Tara (Showtime)
10. East West 101, season 2 (SBS) – full disclosure, I haven't actually seen this season yet, but it's an awesome show. I'm sure it will deserve a place in the list.

Too much tv
I've gotta say that I think Sons of Anarchy season 2 deserves a spot in the list. It was one of the best seasons of TV I've seen in a long while.
Friday Night Lights. I'm serious. Great stuff.
No love for Dexter?
Ben, where did you watch Mad Men 3? I haven't seen it advertised in Australia either on free to air or on Foxtel.
Tony Johnson
Ben, are you even human? You have time to read all the great theological works, teach, have a family, and watch TV to boot. I hate you. (That’s a compliment, by the way.)
Glee... My goodness...
Does Outrageous Fortune air in Australia? It's had me hooked for most of the year now. Stormed through the first three series in a matter of weeks.
Just to push it a little further ... How 'bout your top ten TV show series of all time???
I'm glad you enjoyed Glee as well. However, you might have to adjust your ranking once season one resumes in Fall.
I don't have a TV and so most of these shows I have not have even heard of!
But my family has been enjoying the Big Bang Theory on DVD (except the gratituous promiscuity and sexual innuendo). Surely theologians can identify with the socially challenged physics nerds!
I reckon The West Wing would have to be one of the great series of all time.
"Battestar Galactica"s final season doesn't make the list, seriously? Move along, people, move along.
I'll second The Big Bang Theory. And Ben - no Neighbours? ;p
The last season of Battlestar was atrocious. The first three were amazing.
What? No "House"? If you have "Glee" then "House" really needs to be up there to redeem yourself.
Friday Night Lights is great tv. All ive seen this year is that, seasons 1-5 of the wire and first 2 seasons of deadwood. Although the wire is better in parts, my favorite show was FNL. Deadwood not in the same league as those 2 although it was pretty good. Oh, I also watched the first couple of True Bloods before abandoning.
Thanks for the list. I will have to check some of them out.
Although, I have to agree with some here. For Friday Night Lights and Battlestar not to make the list, it makes me a little suspicious ;)
Happy New Year
Ben: The Wire not even making it into the top 10? Please explain.
Folks, I think everyone agrees that "The Wire" is one of the greatest shows ever made (the three greatest, I reckon, are West Wing, The Wire, and Deadwood) — but "The Wire" finished in 2008, so naturally I couldn't mention it in this post!
But my apologies for neglecting Battlestar Galactica — I followed the series with great interest, but totally forgot about it when I wrote this post. If I'd remembered it, I would have listed it as #6, just above "Glee" (which my wife forced me to watch, but secretly I really enjoyed it).
And I haven't seen any of Friday Night Lights — thanks for the tip, I'll definitely have to check it out.
I might add Modern Family to the list.
