Here I am thinking of two ideas where narrative functions on an unconscious but no less determinative and regulative structure.<BR/><BR/>For instance, Husserl's notion of lifeworld is that taken-for-granted stock of knowledge that regulates the everyday, intersubjective associations of social agents. So it is regulative of life together with others, but since it is taken-for-granted, it is a narrative structure of knowledge that goes unnoticed.<BR/><BR/>Second, McLuhan's notion of "the media is the message" is not just that the medium regulates the message and changes it, but that all media function as a more or less taken-for-granted information architecture that shapes public perception and knowledge. And it also regulates how we consume and what we consume in that information architecture. Now McLuhan dodged the issue of if he was a determinist, but it is hard to see that he was not even on the level of "weak" determinism.<BR/><BR/>So on what level are these narratives regulative of reality before we actually experience a given reality?
