To add to the di...Thomas' point is a good one.

To add to the discussion: The cross imaged in the first eikon is more like a map that is identified with a territory that is at once sublunary and celestial. However, the cross is never identical with either territory, because, in various ways, it can be identified with both.

In this way, the eikonic cross is as an abstraction of the physical. It is this abstraction that forms the lacuna between the imaginary and real. This is the critical space of difference, that area which works to situate 'the concept' or 'representational imaginary' (that is, the eikonic cross) along with that which it seeks to represent, namely the territories of the sublunary and celestial. The latter is the ground of possibility for the former, and the former is the place of play, the place of unrestrained imagination.James Bathouprotheshttp://lupuscain.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14261952.post-64702757344651216752011-11-14T12:36:43.718-05:002011-11-14T12:36:43.718-05:00Thank you, Ben. I can see what you mean about his depiction of the cross only if I bracket out -- somewhat artificially, I think -- his own inclusion of the saints on either side of the Crucified.

And in Grünewald's own way, aren't the reattached head of the Baptist and the Lamb slain the same kind of eschatological and religious incursions you identify in the icon?Thomas Buchannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14261952.post-22879138175175892542011-11-12T02:32:02.196-05:002011-11-12T02:32:02.196-05:00Nice one.
