Quine's "On what there is" also addressed the issue (and Quine generally affirms Russell on descriptions). But it relates to monism-- Russell wanted to suggest the truth hangs on something like verification--the mental Pegasus-idea (or say....an "angel" idea) would not suffice; it seems to be a denial of dualism (or platonic metaphysics)---alas I don't think it's of much help to...believers, at least traditional sort.Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11567400697675996283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14261952.post-54113473572846886922010-03-28T22:13:03.935-04:002010-03-28T22:13:03.935-04:00If I recall correctly the context isn't monism...If I recall correctly the context isn't monism, but Russell's rejection of Meinongian possible objects. Meinong says that we can only talk coherently about things that exist in some sense, but we can talk coherently about possibilia like unicorns (in a way that we can't about square circles, etc.) and so these possibilia must "exist" in some sense, even though they don't "subsist". Russell thinks this is all nonsense because being is univocal; pegasus cannot "be" in the sense of existence and "not-be" in the sense of subsistence at the same time.Shanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14594090275917087869noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14261952.post-50327239332640883672010-03-28T14:32:19.187-04:002010-03-28T14:32:19.187-04:00At any rate, the only paradigmatic analytic philos... At any rate, the only paradigmatic analytic philosopher I can think of that explicitly argues for the univocity of being is Russell.

Are you using univocity as synonymous for...monism, of one type or another? Not really accurate (univocity is used in various senses, not so philosophical). Either way Russell's neutral monism is one type; naturalism (or materialism) another type of monism. And some religious thinkers at times uphold something like monism (usually vaguely spinoza-istic)--indeed listen to Rowan Williams deny miracles and you could swear he was quoting from SpinozaJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11567400697675996283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14261952.post-62532842425977911562010-03-28T14:05:27.415-04:002010-03-28T14:05:27.415-04:00This looks so brilliant that I've spent two da...This looks so brilliant that I've spent two days trying to fit a 6 day trip to Sidney into my summer timetable ... not sure I shall raelly be able to manage it but it is VERY tempting.
