This year, Rowan Williams' Holy Week Lectures were devoted to the Narnia stories of C. S. Lewis. The lectures are available online:Lecture 1: 'Not a tame lion'

When my daughter and I sat down to listen to the first lecture, she turned to me, wide-eyed, and said: 'He even sounds like a character from Narnia!'
You should show your daughter a picture of what Rowan looks like. Narnia (or Middle-Earth) character indeed!

ReplyDeleteWOW! Really? Can't wait to listen. Not a fan of His Grace Rowan 'Wormtongue', as he has done more to damage Anglican Christianity since King Henry the Eighth.
ReplyDeleteHowever, He is a scholar of note and having heard other talks which were quite 'orthodox', 'catholic', and 'evangelical', He can turn a phrase. he has written some good books as well. Too bad He is far off the mark in so many other places.

ReplyDeleteI very much enjoyed listening to them. I'm not a big fan of Rowan Williams (see http://blog.wouldbetheologian.com/2008/07/bodys-grace.html), but he's a wonderful speaker, and I enjoyed his thoughtful, nuanced and appreciative critique of the Chronicles. Still, I was struck by how rarely he used words that I would have expected to come quite trippingly off an archbishop's tongue: "Jesus", "God", "Holy Spirit", were prominent primarily by their absence. He arrives at (almost) all the right conclusions: but I'm still trying to puzzle out how deep his orthodoxy goes.
